How to Create QR Code for Free: Complete Guide A to Z (2026)

QR Codes (Quick Response Codes) have become an indispensable tool in business, marketing, and daily life. From restaurant menus and namecards to advertising campaigns — QR codes bridge the physical world with digital content in a single scan.

In this article, you will learn how to create free QR codes with Metoolzy — from choosing the code type, entering data, and customizing the design, to downloading high-quality files.

What is a QR Code and why do you need it?

A QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode invented by Denso Wave (Japan) in 1994. Unlike traditional barcodes that can only hold a few dozen characters, a QR code can store up to 4,296 characters, including URLs, text, contact information, and many other formats.

According to Statista, global QR code scans increased by 57% between 2023–2025. Especially in Vietnam, QR codes are widely used for payments (VNPay, MoMo), restaurant menus, and offline-to-online marketing.

Common applications of QR Codes

  • Businesses: Print on namecards, brochures, and product packaging to direct customers to websites or landing pages
  • Restaurants / Cafés: Electronic menus reduce printing costs and are easy to update
  • Events: Electronic check-ins, quickly sharing event information
  • Individuals: Share WiFi with guests, create an electronic vCard instead of a paper namecard
  • Marketing: Connect offline ads (banners, posters) to online content

How to create a QR Code with Metoolzy (4 steps)

Step 1: Choose the appropriate QR Code type

Metoolzy supports the 7 most popular QR code types, each optimized for a specific use case:

Type Purpose Example
URL Directs to a website https://metoolzy.com
Text Displays text Promo code: SALE50
Email Pre-fills an email Send feedback to support@
Phone Quick dial Support hotline
WiFi Automatic WiFi connection Café WiFi for guests
SMS Quick SMS compose Register service via SMS
vCard Electronic business card Share full contact info

Tip: If you are unsure which one to choose, start with URL — this is the most common type and works with all scanning devices.

Step 2: Enter the data to be encoded

After choosing the QR code type, the input form will change accordingly. A few important notes:

  • URL: Always include the full URL starting with https://. Example: https://metoolzy.com instead of metoolzy.com
  • WiFi: You must accurately enter the network name (SSID), password, and security type (WPA/WPA2 or WEP)
  • vCard: Provide as much information as possible — full name, job title, company, phone number, email, and website

Step 3: Customize color and size

QR codes do not have to be black and white. You can customize them to match your brand:

  • Foreground color: The color of the modules (squares) in the QR code. You should use a dark color on a light background
  • Background color: The background color. You should keep it light (white or light pastel)
  • Size: From 128px (small, used on web) to 1024px (large, used for printing)

Important note: Always ensure a minimum 40% contrast between the foreground and background. If the contrast is too low, many scanning apps will not be able to read the code.

Step 4: Download and use

Metoolzy offers 3 ways to get your QR code:

  • PNG: Suitable for web, email, and social media. Bitmap file, fixed size
  • SVG: Vector — zooms without losing quality, ideal for printing (namecards, posters, packaging)
  • Copy to clipboard: Quick paste into Figma, Canva, or Google Docs

7 tips for creating effective QR Codes (marketing standard)

  1. Test before printing: Do a test scan with at least 2-3 different apps (iPhone Camera, Google Lens, Zalo) before putting it into production
  2. Minimum print size 2×2cm: Anything smaller will be hard to scan, especially when printed on uneven surfaces
  3. Add a CTA (Call to Action): Print text like “Scan to view menu” or “Scan for details” next to the QR code
  4. Use a short URL: Shorter URL → less complex QR code → faster scanning. Use Metoolzy’s link shortener before generating the QR
  5. Don’t place QR codes on complex backgrounds: Avoid printing on patterned backgrounds, gradients, or photographs
  6. Keep a quiet zone: Leave a blank margin around the QR code (at least equal to 4 modules) — this is the area needed for the scanner to recognize the code
  7. Regularly check: If the QR code leads to a URL, check whether the link is still working, especially for QR codes printed on physical items

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

Criteria Static QR Code Dynamic QR Code
Change content after creation No Yes
Track scans No Yes
Code complexity Depends on content Always simple (uses short URL)
Cost Free Usually paid
Best for WiFi, vCard, fixed text Marketing campaigns, changing menus

Currently, Metoolzy provides free static QR codes. The dynamic QR code feature is in development and will be released soon.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do QR codes created on Metoolzy expire?

No. Static QR codes generated by Metoolzy will work forever — the data is encoded directly into the image and does not rely on any server.

Is there a limit to how many QR codes I can create?

No. You can create an unlimited number of QR codes, completely free, with no account registration required.

How much data can a QR code hold?

Up to about 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 2,953 bytes of data. However, the more content there is, the more complex and harder to scan the code becomes. It is recommended to keep content under 300 characters for the best scanning performance.

Can I use the QR codes for commercial purposes?

Absolutely. QR codes created on Metoolzy have no watermarks and you have full rights to use them for any purpose — personal or commercial.
