About Morse Code Translator
Morse code is a method of encoding text using sequences of dots (.) and dashes (-) that represent letters, numbers, and punctuation. Developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s for electrical telegraph communication, it remains in use today in aviation, amateur radio, and emergency signaling. This tool provides instant, bidirectional conversion between plain text and International Morse code. In Text to Morse mode, type any sentence and see it rendered as dots and dashes with proper spacing — single space between letters, slash or double space between words. In Morse to Text mode, paste any Morse sequence and decode it back to readable text. The built-in audio playback feature uses the Web Audio API to generate real beep tones at 700 Hz, letting you hear the rhythm of your Morse code directly in the browser. All processing is client-side, with no data sent to any server.
How to Use Morse Code Translator
- Select the conversion direction: "Text → Morse" to encode plain text, or "Morse → Text" to decode Morse back to letters.
- In Text to Morse mode, type or paste your text into the input box — letters, numbers, and common punctuation are all supported.
- In Morse to Text mode, enter Morse code with a single space between letters and a forward slash (/) or double space between words.
- The result appears instantly in the output area below the input.
- Click "Play Audio" to hear the Morse code played as beep tones through your browser's Web Audio API.
- Click the Copy button to copy the output to your clipboard for use in other applications.
Frequently Asked Questions
What characters does this Morse code tool support?
The tool supports all 26 Latin letters (A–Z), digits 0–9, and a range of punctuation marks including period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, slash, plus, minus, equals, parentheses, ampersand, colon, semicolon, quote marks, apostrophe, and at sign.
How do I separate words in Morse code input?
In the Morse to Text mode, separate individual letters with a single space and separate words with a forward slash (/) or a double space. The tool handles both conventions.
How does the audio playback work?
Audio playback uses the Web Audio API built into modern browsers. It generates a 700 Hz sine wave tone for each dot and dash, following standard Morse code timing: a dot is one unit long, a dash is three units, and gaps between elements follow ITU standard proportions.
Is Morse code still used today?
Yes. Morse code is still used in amateur (ham) radio, aviation navigation beacons (VOR/NDB identifiers), and as an accessibility input method. It is also part of the international distress signal SOS (... --- ...) recognized worldwide.
Can I use this tool offline?
Once the page is loaded, all encoding, decoding, and audio playback work entirely in your browser without any network connection.
